Hello, I am Karen! With over four decades as an occupational therapist, educator, advocate, and scholar, I have dedicated my career to advancing our profession through innovation, mentorship, teaching, and evidence-based practice. I have had the privilege of witnessing and participating in the evolution of occupational therapy on both national and international stages. ​ At GrowthNest, I bring my passion for mentoring occupational therapy practitioners, combining rigorous academic foundations with real-world application to support professionals in navigating their career journeys with confidence and purpose.

Throughout my career, I have held significant leadership roles including President and Vice President of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). I understand the distinct challenges and opportunities that come with professional growth in our profession. My approach focuses on helping practitioners develop authentic leadership skills that align with their values and career aspirations.
My mentoring philosophy centers on meeting each person exactly where they are in their journey, whether you are a new graduate finding your footing or an experienced practitioner seeking new directions. I believe in empowering professionals to become advocates not just for their clients or students, but for themselves and the profession.

🌿 Innovation & Technology in Practice
As someone who has pioneered the integration of technology in occupational therapy—from early ergonomics research to current artificial intelligence applications—I help practitioners understand how emerging technologies can enhance rather than replace the human elements of our work. I have authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and founded the international journal WORK: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment & Rehabilitation in 1990, which continues to advance knowledge in the broad area of this occupation.
My recent focus on artificial intelligence in healthcare reflects my commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation while ensuring technology serves our core mission of promoting health and participation.
🌿 Global Perspective & Professional Development
My international experience, including a Fulbright Scholarship in Iceland and collaborations across six continents, has taught me that while cultures differ, the fundamental human need for meaningful occupation transcends borders. I bring this global perspective to help practitioners understand their role in a larger context and develop critical consciousness about diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in providing effective practice, teaching and scholarship.
I am particularly passionate about helping professionals articulate the distinct value of occupational therapy and develop the confidence to promote our profession in diverse settings.

Having received the AOTA 2020 Outstanding Mentor Award, I understand that effective mentoring is both an art and a science. My approach is grounded in decades of experience mentoring students, new practitioners, and seasoned professionals through career transitions.
I believe mentoring relationships should be dynamic and evolving, adapting to each person's distinct needs, strengths, and aspirations. My Philosophy Innovation happens at the intersection of curiosity, courage, and commitment. Throughout my career—from co-developing one of the first computer-based ergonomics assessments to exploring AI applications in occupational therapy—I have learned that the most meaningful advances come when we stay grounded in our professional and personal values while remaining open to new possibilities. I believe every occupational therapy practitioner has the potential to be a leader and innovator in their chosen area of practice. My role as a mentor is to help you discover your distinct strengths, navigate challenges with resilience, and develop the confidence to contribute meaningfully to achieve your professional vision.
