How Mentorship, Reflection, and Connection Nurture Professional Growth in Occupational Therapy

Updated: Feb 2

At Growth Nest, we believe that growth doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in a nest.

Through an examination of nearly two decades of occupational therapy mentoring research, we (Nancy Doyle, Liat Gafni-Lachter, and Karen Jacobs) uncovered a powerful truth: mentoring is a thread that weaves through every stage of professional life.

The Power of Mentoring

Our scoping review of studies published between 2002 and 2018 revealed that mentoring supports growth across the professional development continuum—from students and new graduates to seasoned clinicians, educators, and researchers. Whether mentoring occurred in classrooms, clinics, or laboratories, the outcomes were remarkably consistent: greater confidence, deeper reflection, and stronger professional identity.

We found that mentoring takes many forms—individual or group, peer or expert, in-person or virtual—but at its core, it is built on four essential elements:

🌱 Support

🌱 Learning

🌱 Process

🌱 Relationship

When these four elements come together, mentoring becomes a dynamic and reciprocal experience. It helps mentees gain knowledge and purpose, mentors rediscover meaning in their work, and both build a sense of shared belonging within the profession.

The Foundations of Meaningful Mentoring

Our review also highlighted that meaningful mentoring doesn’t happen by chance. It thrives through three simple but powerful mechanisms:

🌱 a plan that provides structure and clarity,

🌱 strategies that promote reflection, problem-solving, and goal-setting, and

🌱 steady support that fosters trust, respect, and encouragement.

Those same elements guide everything we do at Growth Nest. Our mentoring circles, workshops, and reflective tools are designed to create a structure to support the individual path and help you move forward while staying grounded in what matters most.

A Shared Journey

Mentorship, at its best, is a shared journey. It transforms careers, reconnects people to their purpose, and reminds us that learning is a lifelong process.

As our own work revealed, mentoring is a goal-oriented learning process that takes place in a supportive relationship. This is what we aim for the Nest to provide: safety, guidance, and space to take flight.

🌿 A Moment of Reflection: How Do You Mentor? How Do You Want to Be Mentored?

Because mentoring is relational and intentional, this is a beautiful moment to pause and reflect on your own approach. Here are a few prompts inspired by our research—and by the philosophies that guide our work at Growth Nest:

If you mentor others…

  • Do I offer the balance of support and structure that helps someone truly grow?

  • How do I make space for mentees’ reflection, visioning, and goal-setting?

  • In what ways do I honor the mentoring relationship—trust, respect, presence, and curiosity?

  • How do I celebrate progress, both the small steady steps and the big leaps?

  • What have my mentees taught me about who I am as a mentor?

If you are seeking mentorship…

  • What kind of support helps me thrive—guidance, accountability, inspiration, clarity?

  • Do I prefer structure and step-by-step plans, or reflective exploration and open dialogue?

  • Am I looking for someone who will challenge me, reassure me, or both?

  • Where do I feel stuck, and what do I hope a mentor will help me uncover or achieve?

  • What kind of relationship do I want—ongoing, short-term, project-specific, or big-picture growth?

And perhaps most importantly:

What do I need right now to grow into the professional I want to become? Reflection is often the missing link between wanting growth and taking the steps to make growth happen. These questions are an invitation to begin that journey.

The Role of Community in Professional Growth

In addition to mentorship, community plays a vital role in our professional journeys. When we connect with others who share our passions and values, we create a supportive environment. This community fosters collaboration, encourages innovation, and provides a safe space for sharing ideas.

Engaging with peers allows us to learn from one another. We can share experiences, challenges, and successes. This exchange of knowledge enriches our practice and helps us grow.

Embracing Lifelong Learning

As occupational therapy practitioners, we must embrace the idea of lifelong learning. The field is constantly evolving, and staying current is essential for our professional growth.

Participating in workshops, attending conferences, and engaging in online courses are excellent ways to expand our knowledge. These opportunities not only enhance our skills but also connect us with others in the field.

The Impact of Reflection on Growth

Reflection is a powerful tool for growth. It allows us to pause, assess our experiences, and identify areas for improvement. By taking the time to reflect, we can better understand our strengths and weaknesses.

Consider keeping a reflective journal. This practice can help you track your progress, set goals, and celebrate achievements. It’s a simple yet effective way to foster personal and professional growth.

Conclusion: Join Us on This Journey

We invite you to join us as Growth Nest takes off—to learn, share, and grow alongside others who believe that mentorship is not a luxury, but a foundation for thriving practice.
